Living Legacies and Life On Purpose

Happy FriYAYYYY!

I hope today’s JOYrney Mail™ serves as a reminder to to intentionally live each day like it's your last – because it could be, so...

and let’s hop in!

JOYrney™ Updates

This Monday, I had a doctor’s appointment that reminded me that about a year ago, a trip to the emergency room resulted in a three-day hospital stay.

If you’re new to the JOYrney™ and have no idea what I’m talking about, after you finish this newsletter you can read more on that HERE.

Not that I needed the reminder, because every Sunday on my drive to church I pass by the same hospital where I was admitted. From the road, I can even see the hospital room where I was parked for almost four days as I awaited various test results.

If there is one thing that will change your perspective on life, an extended hospital stay is it.

Immediately after that hospital stay, I changed my life and business.

I decided I was no longer willing to sacrifice my life to hustle in the name of “grinding” and worldly success.

But what did that look like, and what did that mean for my career/business and everything I’d been building over the past 15 years?

LIVING WITH INTENTION.

I can’t remember what initiated the conversation, but last week, I was chatting with a good friend when she asked, “What do you want your legacy to be?”

I responded with a list of things including:

  • Being a supportive and attentive wife and partner

  • Being a caring and intentional person who is never “too busy” for those around them

  • Being a good mom - not in a superficial or performative sense, but leaving this world with my kids feeling and knowing that they are truly loved and encouraged and empowered to become the best and most authentic versions of themselves

  • Leading others to Freedom - by living as someone who truly loves the Lord, His word, and one who did her best to exemplify a life that follows Christ

While I said all this, as I was driving home later that evening, it dawned on me that I’d overcomplicated it.

I want my legacy to be this: That I loved others well.

If you’re not sure what that looks like, Paul gives a pretty robust and complete description in 1 Corinthians chapter 13, especially verses 3-8:

“4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
8 Love never fails.”

When I completed my laundry list of an answer, my friend’s response surprised me.

She said “I like the way you think about it. Most people think of legacy in terms of death, and looking back with regrets of things that they wish they’d done – but the way you’re framing it, it makes it something where we can intentionally act on our legacies today.”

I’d never consciously thought about it that way, but it’s true!

It’s for this very reason that when it comes to the JOYrney To Purpose® and the work I do with clients—regardless of whether it’s a coaching client, consulting with an organization, or leading a corporate team workshop—we intentionally focus on JOY-led VISION.

Your legacy is something that you actively build every day, whether you’re intentional about it or not.

With a positive vision in mind, you can create your legacy with a faith-inspired mindset that’s geared towards hope—not limited to the failures of your past.

So, how do you want to be remembered?

What are the life lessons and fundamental feelings that you wish to leave with those who know and love you most?

Are you currently acting on that legacy? If not, please know that it’s not too late.

Every day you wake up is another opportunity to begin creating the life and legacy you desire. So, moving forward, how will you “seize the day” and live each day like it’s your last? Reply back and let me know!
